In the Orthodox Church, Easter seems to have a much deeper significance than Christmas in the consciousness as well as the traditions of the people. The fact must be linked both with the natural festive atmosphere of spring in the Eastern Mediterranean and with the prerequisite of the human death of Jesus for the salvatory resurrection of Christ to take place.
In Nubia, it is rather difficult to suggest such a preference, given at least the preponderance of the scenes of Nativity in the Churches with mural decoration discovered along the Middle Nile Valley, especially as compared to the single scene of the Passion from Faras, now exhibited in the Sudan National Museum.
The mural is preserved only partially and the two scenes in the upper register concern events of the Holy Week that in the Eastern Church are celebrated in the evening of Holy Friday: the Descent from the Cross and the Entombment of Christ.
In the lower register a Descent to the Underworld, followed probably by a meeting of the Resurrected Son of God with his Disciples, commemorate the climax of the Pascal sequence: the glorious for Christians victory over death.
It is this wish that the Greek speaking Christians exchange from midnight of Holy Saturday to Easter Sunday: XPICTOC ANECTH – the Christ is resurrected (the same given by the Ethiopians and used in the title of this entry).
